Parliament approves GH¢31bn for Education Ministry
Parliament has approved a GH¢31 billion budget for the Ministry of Education for the 2025 fiscal year.
As part of its initiatives for the year, the Ministry plans to waive academic fees for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions to promote access to higher education. Additionally, the government will introduce free tertiary education for persons with disabilities (PWDs) to ease the financial burden on affected families.
To improve teacher welfare, the Ministry will launch the Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative, which includes the construction of 100 accommodation facilities for basic school teachers.
In a separate approval, Parliament has also allocated GHS4 billion to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs. The funds will cover allowances for assembly members and traditional authorities and support various ministerial programmes.
As part of its plans, the Ministry intends to establish a National Prayer Day. Addressing concerns over assembly members’ remuneration, Minister for Roads and Highways and MP for Adaklu, Governs Agbodza, assured Parliament that their allowances will be factored into the Common Fund formula currently under consideration.
