NPP to set up committee to review 2024 election defeat

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to establish a review committee in January 2025 to analyze its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The NPP lost to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December 7 polls. NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured over four million votes, while the NDC’s John Mahama, now president-elect, garnered over six million votes.

In the parliamentary elections, the NDC secured more than 180 seats, leaving the NPP with just over 80 seats.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, NPP National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim reaffirmed the party’s commitment to understanding the reasons behind the unexpected loss.

He stated that the review committee will engage party stakeholders and the public to analyze the contributing factors. The goal, according to him, is to draw lessons from the experience and position the party for future electoral success.

“We went into the 2024 general elections with a lot of hope and positivity. Our aim was to secure an emphatic victory at the polls and we worked very hard at it. As a party, we put in our best efforts in the campaign. I commend all members of the various campaign teams of the party, from polling stations to the national level who also put in their very best in the competition.”

Despite their efforts, the election results were not in their favour. Ntim acknowledged the disappointment felt by party members and supporters, but he remained optimistic about the future. “There is no doubt that the outcome of the election was not what we hoped for. We may not have won the battle but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party. As leaders of the party, we share in the pain of all party faithful who have been devastated by the outcome of the elections. We understand your disappointment because we feel it too,” Ntim stated.
