Govt releases ₵25m to WAEC to prevent delays in WASSCE results

Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum

The Ministry of Education has released an additional GH₵25 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to support its operations and ensure the smooth and seamless continuation of marking activities.

This follows mounting concerns over the potential delay in the release of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results due to the government’s outstanding debts to WAEC.

WAEC had expressed apprehension regarding the financial situation, which could jeopardize the marking process.

WAEC had also expressed disappointment over the GH¢25 million cedis recently released by the government to offset part of the GH¢118 million debt owed to the Council.

According to WAEC, the funds are insufficient to enable the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, which remain delayed due to the government’s indebtedness.

But Kwasi Kwarteng, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, in a statement issued on Monday, December 23, noted, “WAEC has assured the Ministry that the 2024 WASSCE results will be released soon.”
