SISAALA UNION CALLS FOR CENTRAL MARKET TO DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH
The Sisaala Union has intensified its call for the establishment of a central market to address the dwindling prices of maize and other cereal crops in Sissala land. In a welcome address delivered on his behalf by the 1st Vice President, Mr. Mumuni Yahaya, at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, the President of the Union, Mr. Mahamu Baka Aduna, stated that such a facility is essential to propel economic growth and protect local farmers from being exploited by business interests.
The meeting, held at the Sissala East Municipal Assembly Conference Hall, brought together Sisaala people from the four Sissala districts and delegations from across the country under the theme: “Propelling Economic Growth through Improved Prices of Grains: The Need for a Central Market”. Mr. Aduna highlighted that despite the Sissala area possessing colossal natural and human resources, it remains one of the most underserved regions in Ghana, particularly regarding education, agriculture, road infrastructure, and the development of women and children.
The President noted that the Union’s strategy involves strong advocacy at both local and national levels to compel duty bearers to prioritize these key development areas. He further lamented the apathy of some community members toward demanding their share of the national cake, urging a sense of “positive defiance” to ensure the region is not left behind in the development league. On the issue of security, the Union reported a successful dialogue with the Regional Police Command following a surge in armed robberies in the area. According to the address, this engagement led to the swift replacement of the Sissala East Police Commander to bolster local security efforts.
Regarding agricultural support, the Union announced it had entered into a partnership with an organization in the Czech Republic aimed at providing farmers with soft loans at a seven percent interest rate. Although the initiative faced delays due to rigorous documentation, Mr. Aduna assured members that the credit facility is expected to commence next year.
The high-profile event saw a broad representation of Sissala leadership, including revered Paramount Chiefs, Members of Parliament for Sissala East and West, and the respective Municipal and District Chief Executives. Also in attendance were Hon. Moses Dramani Luri, a lecturer at the Languages Department of the University of Education, Winneba, and former President of the Union, Dr. Roger A. L. Kanton.
Mr. Aduna concluded the address by expressing his appreciation to the Union’s patrons and stakeholders for their unflinching support in making the 2025 AGM a success.
