W/R: Two Chinese arrested for illegal mining along Bonsa river, 7 Ghanaians arraigned
Two Chinese have been arrested for their involvement in illegal mining activities along the Bonsa River in the Western Region, as part of the ongoing efforts to curb the environmental and economic damage caused by illicit mining.
The suspects, identified as Huan Ciongjian (38) and Ling Yong (56), were detained by the Western Central Regional Police Command for operating without the necessary permits, contributing to widespread environmental degradation in the area.
The two foreign nationals have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and processing, as required by the country’s legal framework for foreign nationals engaged in illegal activities.
In a related development, seven Ghanaians involved in illegal mining have been arraigned before the Special Court for Illegal Mining at Sekondi. The accused— Ibrahim Dauda, Michael Tettey Komlorm, Douglas Ayambila, Elvis Aborta, Nsoh Oto (alias Agorogo), Kwadwo George (alias Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (alias Atta)—are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and undertaking mining activities without a license.
The suspects were remanded into prison custody after their court appearance and will reappear on April 17, 2025, for further proceedings.
These actions by the police come amid growing concerns over illegal mining, or “Galamsey,” which continues to have devastating effects on Ghana’s environment, especially its water bodies and forests. Authorities are stepping up efforts to hold both local and foreign perpetrators accountable as they intensify their crackdown on illegal mining activities across the country.
The Ghana Immigration Service has pledged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the swift deportation and prosecution of any foreign nationals found engaging in illicit mining, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources.
