Education Will Remain at the Centre of Everything I Do – Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala West and Deputy Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and innovation, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has declared that education will remain the central pillar of his development agenda for the constituency.

The MP made this commitment during the maiden Sissala West Best Teacher and Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at the District Education Directorate in Gwollu on May 1, 2026. The event, which celebrated teaching excellence and academic potential, brought together key stakeholders, including District Chief Executives (DCEs) from Sissala East, Wa Municipal, and Lambussie, as well as traditional rulers and educationists.

In a keynote address that highlighted his personal journey from the community of Bouti, Hon. Sukparu emphasized that his investment in education was a “debt of gratitude” rather than mere policy. “As long as I have a role to play in the development of Sissala West, education will remain at the centre of everything I do,” the MP stated. Addressing the scholarship beneficiaries, he urged them to view the support as a community investment in their future, charging them to work hard and remain focused. He further assured the district that he would continue to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address the teacher deficit in the area and create incentives for staff retention.

The Upper West Regional Director of Education, Madam Alice Ellen Abeere-Inga, challenged the awardees to replicate their “special” recognition through improved classroom performance. She announced the upcoming opening of the National Teacher Prize portal, urging local winners to compete at the national level.

However, the Director issued a stern warning regarding the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). She noted that examination malpractice is “eating into the education sector” and cautioned that any teacher found complicit would face the full rigors of the law, including possible dismissal.

Madam Abeere-Inga also made a passionate plea to traditional and political leaders to refrain from interfering in the “teacher rationalization” process, which aims to redistribute staff from overstaffed schools to deprived ones.

Earlier, the Sissala West District Director of Education, Mr. Dramani Chakura, commended the MP for his consistent support, citing the donation of furniture, financial aid for mock examinations, and the construction of library facilities.

Despite these strides, the Director highlighted critical challenges, including a teaching staff gap of 247 and a shortage of non-teaching staff. He appealed for the renovation of the district library and the provision of at least 1,000 mono desks to facilitate the smooth conduct of external examinations.

The ceremony was attended by the Paramount Chief of the Gwollu Traditional Area, Kuoro Babukwie Bajor Limann V, and various divisional chiefs. Also present were the Principal of Tumu College of Education, heads of second-cycle institutions, and representatives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).In all, 20 teachers were honored for their outstanding service. Winners in the KG, Primary, JHS, SHS, and SISO categories each received a motorbike, a television set, a laptop, and a citation. The second and third runners-up were presented with fridges, televisions, laptops, and citations. Additionally, 365 students received scholarship cheques totaling GH₵ 560,000 to cover their school fees.
