Students Once Sat on Logs to Learn __ Daabu Inusah Recalls
Education is often regarded as the cornerstone of development in many societies, as it enables individuals to improve their skills and knowledge in various fields. Whether it is commercial farming, carpentry, or any other trade, education is essential and beneficial across all aspects of human life.
Pieng is a community situated in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region, sharing borders with Bakwala to the north, Nabugubele to the east, Sakai to the west, and Challu to the south. The Pieng Basic School was established in 1977 within this community and has produced notable figures in society, including a member of parliament and a district chief executive.
Mr. Inusah Daabu, a proud native of the land, attended the school from primary to middle school, completing his studies in 1986. He has recently extended support to the community school, reflecting on his experiences during his time there. He recounted the lack of furniture, electricity, and books for learning, using metal plates with cotton as lights and logs for seating. Despite these challenges, his education enabled him to further his studies at Kansas, the Tamale College of Education, and ultimately the University of Cape Coast. He is currently employed with Plan Ghana International in Tamale and credits Pieng School for his achievements.
Motivated by this background, Mr. Inusah Daabu took it upon himself to contribute to the school that shaped him. He acquired educational materials, including books in subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Computing, totaling 219 books. These resources will support students from Basic One to Basic Six, serving a student population of nearly 300.

During a brief meeting to present the books to the community, the Chief, PTA, MCE, and representatives from the office, led by Deputy Director of GES Mr. Godfred Kanton, were present to receive them. Mr. Inusah Daabu urged the PTA and teachers to take good care of the books and enhance the school’s reputation. He also encouraged parents to instill discipline in their children and remain committed to their education.
Mr. Godfred Kanton, representing the GES Director, expressed concern over the low enrollment of pupils at the KG level. He encouraged parents to enroll their children in the school and lamented the scarcity of female teachers, asking the community to attract female educators with a positive attitude. He also appealed to the donor to provide learning materials and furniture for the KG.

Mr. Abudu Kofi, the PTA Chairman, who received the learning materials, expressed gratitude to the donor and urged teachers to handle the books with care. He noted that this was the third time the donor had supported the school. The Headmaster, Mr. Abass Napuna, expressed joy upon receiving the items and pledged the staff’s commitment to the responsible management of the books.
