Ablekuma North chaos: CID has commenced investigation – Suhuyini
Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into the violence that erupted during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday July 16, he emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s democracy by rising above partisanship and holding institutions accountable.
“We are becoming aware of the need for us to be sensitive when it comes to the protection of our democracy and not to allow our partisanship to cloud our activities, especially when it comes to the survival of our democracy. For us, that is our commitment,” he said.
He expressed optimism about the steps being taken by law enforcement and urged the public to monitor the process closely to ensure transparency and justice.
“I am happy to announce also that the Police CID has commenced investigations into the Ablekuma North issue and we should all be interested in the kind of work they will do. We must hold them to task,” he added.
Violence broke out during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, when a group of unidentified macho men stormed St. Peter’s polling centre, disrupting the electoral process and creating chaos.
Channel One News’s Jude Duncan reported that former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson was among the individuals assaulted by the group during the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the men arrived in a highly coordinated manner, instilling fear and panic among voters and electoral officers. The confusion led to a temporary suspension of the voting process until security personnel stepped in to restore order.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from political stakeholders and the general public, with increasing calls for President John Mahama’s government and the security services to ensure justice is served swiftly and fairly.
