NPP must rally behind Bawumia for 2028 victory – Alhaji Bashiru
Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Ibrahim Bashiru, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the party’s best hope of reclaiming power in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Alhaji Bashiru lauded Dr. Bawumia as the most capable and visionary among the emerging contenders for the NPP’s 2026 flagbearer race.
“I support one person — he is the person whom everybody in this country, especially in the NPP, believes that if they really want power in 2028, they must vote for him,” he said.
He described Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 presidential election, as a “humble, result-oriented” leader with a proven record in public and political service. According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s emotional intelligence and innovative mindset make him the ideal choice to lead the party — and the country.
“Dr. Bawumia is calm, has innovative ideas, and is well prepared for the presidency. I do not see that in anybody else’s face — I see that only in the face of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he added.
His endorsement comes just days after the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, officially opened nominations for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
Interested aspirants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of GHS100,000. The NPP is set to elect its next flagbearer on January 31, 2026.
So far, notable names in the race include former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
