Show leadership, act on minority’s petition over electoral violence – Effia MP to Mahama

Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to act promptly on the petition submitted by the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

The Minority on Thursday, July 24, petitioned the President following violent incidents during the parliamentary election re-run in the Ablekuma North Constituency, which led to the arrest of two individuals.

Speaking on Eyewitness News,  following development on Thursday, July 24, 2025, the Effia MP stressed the urgency of taking decisive action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“We must learn from the past and its mistakes. If we condemned such acts yesterday, why are we silent today? If it happened then, should we allow it to continue now?” he questioned.

“I will never glorify wrongdoing. What happened in Ayawaso West Wuogon is not something we should be proud of. Years later, we’re witnessing similar violence in Ablekuma North. If we allow incidents like Ayawaso West Wuogon to go unaddressed, as seen again in Ablekuma North, we can’t guarantee a peaceful future. That’s why action is needed now.”

The petition followed a dramatic walkout in Parliament, led by the Minority Caucus, after Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s request to address the House on the violence in Ablekuma North was declined.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin postponed the matter, indicating it would be allocated a full day for debate at a later time. In protest, the Minority walked out of the chamber moments before the Finance Minister began his presentation.
