NURTURING POTENTIALS: A VISION FOR SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN TUMU MUNICIPALITY
In March 2025, I was posted to Tumu as the Municipal Police Commander in the vibrant Tumu Municipality. Upon my arrival, I was struck not only by the town’s rich culture and community spirit but also by the untapped potential in sports among its youth.
During my initial explorations, I encountered an extraordinary number of talented young boys and girls whom I’ve tried to open trial opportunities for. The adaptation and the nurturing are still ongoing. I have joined the Great Fingers volleyball team and am using it as a means to exercise and get acquainted with the people. During one of our training sessions at the Tumu Community centre volleyball court, an 8-year-old boy by name AWUNBOLO JOSEPH, A Basic 2 student of Tumu Basic School who stays at Tumu Zongo was spotted and his passion for sports was palpable. His enthusiasm and talent for catching the balls whiles we were playing were evident, sparking a vision within me: and I would like to invest in the future of this young athlete and others like him in our Tumu community.
Sports play a crucial role in the physical, mental, and social development of children. Engaging in sports fosters discipline, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that are vital for success in all areas of life. By nurturing young talent like Joseph, we can not only enhance their skills but also provide them with opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.
My goal is to adopt this promising young boy and guide him on a journey toward becoming a better sports person. This involves more than just training; it encompasses mentorship, education, and support. I envision creating a structured program that includes:
1. Skill Development
Regular training sessions focusing on fundamental skills and techniques in various sports.
2. Education
Encouraging academic excellence alongside athletic pursuits, ensuring a well-rounded development by sponsoring his education both financially and mentally.
3. Exposure
Providing opportunities for Joseph to participate in local, regional, and national competitions to gain experience and recognition.
In general terms, to realise this vision, it is essential to cultivate a sports culture in Tumu Municipality. This could involve organising community sports events, establishing sports clubs, and collaborating with local schools to promote physical education. By creating an environment that celebrates sports, we can inspire more children to pursue their athletic dreams like my son and good friend Awunbolo Joseph.
As I embark on this journey in Tumu Municipality, I am filled with hope and determination. By adopting this young boy and investing in the sports potential within our community, I cannot only change individual lives but also uplift the entire municipality. Together, we can create a legacy of excellence in sports that will resonate for generations to come.
Let us nurture our youth, harness their potential, and pave the way for a brighter, more active future in Tumu
