PTA Hands Over 10-Seater Toilet Facility to Tumu SHS/Technical School

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Tumu Senior High/Technical School has handed over a 10-seater flush toilet facility to the school, completing a project that had been left uncompleted for years.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the PTA Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Basuo, said when the current executives were voted into office in August last year, they were taken round the school to assess the challenges facing it. He said the headmaster mentioned the lack of toilet facilities as a major issue, and it was based on that the PTA executives decided to continue an uncompleted structure started by the former Member of Parliament, Hon. Amidu Chinnia.

He said the PTA wrote to the former MP, who permitted them to continue the project, and that was the reason the structure had now been completed and was being handed over to the school for use. He called on the school to take very good care of the facility.

Mr. Basuo also said the PTA had heard the Acting Headmistress raise concerns about the lack of furniture, and assured that the PTA was in the process of producing furniture for the school. He said by the close of the semester, the PTA would complete the furniture and hand it over, but noted that not all students would benefit immediately, and urged those who would receive furniture to take good care of it. He used the opportunity to appeal to parents and students to pay the furniture user fee and PTA dues, saying the money would be put to judicious use.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Board of Tumu Senior High/Technical School, Mr. Raymond Baku, told students that many of them standing there hoped to one day return to the school as headmaster or headmistress. He therefore urged them to take good care of the facility, so that when they return in future, the project would still be in good shape. He said just as the students were neatly dressed that day, they should keep the facility just as neat, and cautioned against open defecation on the compound.

The Assistant Head of Administration, Madam Abiba Tombie, thanked the PTA for the project and also expressed gratitude to the former MP, Hon. Amidu Chinnia, for his support. She assured the PTA that the facility would be put to good use and that the school had put an end to open defecation. She also appealed to students to take good care of the facility so that the PTA could channel resources to other needs of the school, noting that the school still lacked classroom space, furniture and a good drainage system, among other challenges, and appealed to the PTA to continue supporting the school.

Speaking on behalf of the student body, the Groundswork Prefect, Gariwie Wahid Moro, thanked the PTA, the Governing Board and everyone present for the facility. He promised that students would put the facility to good use, and pledged that as groundswork prefect, students would clean the facility every Monday and Wednesday. He also used the opportunity to appeal to the PTA to build a similar toilet facility for the girls, saying they continue to suffer for lack of one.

The facility, which was commissioned today, has 10 seats, with five on each side, all fitted with flush toilets, and is supplied with water through an overhead polytank.
