Nkwanta South: One dead, several injured in renewed clashes – MCE confirms
Municipal Chief of the Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi, has confirmed a fatality and multiple injuries following renewed ethnic tensions in the municipality.
Gunshots were heard around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday June 26 in the Oti Region, after a group attempted to perform libation rites as part of preparations for the upcoming Yam Festival. The act was reportedly resisted by a rival group, reigniting longstanding tensions among the area’s ethnic factions.
According to reports, the violence caught local authorities by surprise, especially as an earlier agreement had been reached to suspend all public festivals due to the fragile peace in the area.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, the MCE explained that two individuals were initially rushed to the hospital. One unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment. In addition, two young women were also shot during the incident, of whom one cannot be found.
“We rushed them to the hospital, but this afternoon around 3 PM, one passed, but the other is receiving treatment. There are two young ladies who were also shot; one has been moved to the hospital, the other, we can’t find her. We do not know her whereabouts as I speak,” he revealed.
The MCE emphasised that efforts are underway to restore calm and trace the missing individual.
