MobileMoney Ltd: We block over 400,000 fraudulent SMS daily
Chief Risk and Compliance Officer of Mobile Money Limited, Godwin Tamakloe, has disclosed that the company blocks more than 400,000 fraudulent text messages each day as part of efforts to curb the growing menace of mobile money scams.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, May 2, he explained that the mobile money platform has deployed a robust filtering system that identifies and blocks suspicious messages before they reach customers.
“…With the text message, it is because we have a system that we have set some rules on that block that SMS that goes to the customers. The attack channels are an SMS, a link or a call. So the system blocks the SMS because of certain words in the SMS. We can block over 400,000 SMS in a day that should have gone to customers for them to now call up and defraud,” he stated.
Tamakloe also dismissed claims that mobile money service personnel are involved in the increasing cases of fraud.
He insisted that workers within the service chain do not have access to sensitive customer information and are not in a position to leak data to fraudsters.
His comments come in the wake of widespread public concern about mobile money fraud, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to share their experiences of being scammed.
In response to this, he appealed to customers who fall victim to mobile money fraud to be honest and open about how they were defrauded to help service agents provide effective assistance and prevent further losses.
