Galamsey: We’re on course to repeal L.I. 2462 – NDC’s Wonder Madilo

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Wonder Madilo, has affirmed that the government is steadily progressing towards the repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, a key regulation guiding small-scale mining in Ghana.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, April 22, Madilo addressed mounting pressure on the NDC government to act swiftly in the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, just 100 days into its administration.

He emphasized that the NDC’s manifesto outlines clear strategies for addressing illegal mining, one of which includes repealing L.I. 2462 — a process he says is already underway.

“Indeed, there are several issues that would be looked at. But it is one step at a time. When did we come into government? it is just about 100 days and yet the NPP is in a hurry to have us stop galamsey. They think that we should be doing something to end galamsey.

“But they also agree that the fight is not a one-day statement. While in government, they stated that over and over again. So, why are they now on our necks to fight galamsey?

“We have stated in our manifesto what we are going to do to stop galamsey. One is the repeal of the L.I 2462 and parliament are not over. I have mentioned to you that it is not a rush business,” he stated.

According to Madilo, the repeal of L.I. 2462 is only one part of a broader plan to regulate and reform small-scale mining in the country. He added that various state actors — including the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Attorney General — have contributed meaningfully to the ongoing repeal process.

“We are not in a hurry to conclude now. It doesn’t mean that because it has not happened in the last few days, it will not happen again. Remember, the fight is not only about the repeal of the LI. The repealing is only one of them, which will happen anyway. Both the minister for lands and natural resources and the attorney general, and others have made inputs in the percess of repealing the LI,” he stated.
