Govt enabling galamsey thrive to feed ‘their people’ – A Rocha Ghana
Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, has alleged that the government is deliberately failing to tackle the illegal mining menace, commonly known as galamsey, suggesting possible complicity in the matter.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 10, Bosu criticised the government’s response to the crisis, describing it as ineffective and inadequate in light of the widespread environmental destruction caused by illegal mining operations.
He argued that the state has failed to fully deploy law enforcement, intelligence services, and policy mechanisms to address the issue.
“Why is it that we’ve been talking about state of emergency, strategy that will nib the impunity of people mining in our forest reserves and our rivers in the bud? Somebody will say one touch, but they have just deliberately refused,” Bosu remarked.
Drawing a comparison to how the state would treat armed threats, Bosu questioned the “kid gloves” approach being taken toward illegal miners.
He contended that the government’s inaction flies in the face of its pre-election promises and has allowed illegal mining to continue with impunity, resulting in severe ecological damage.
Bosu further accused the government of putting partisan interests ahead of national concerns.
“There is certainly some deliberate government complicity in not dealing with this matter so their people can feed,” he said.
“This is against everything they told us before they came into power.”
