EC Pauses Presidential Ballot Printing Following Akua Donkor’s Passing

By Haruna Kuri Kaayi

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has temporarily paused the printing of presidential ballot papers for the upcoming 2024 elections, following the sudden passing of Madam Akua Donkor, the Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Her death, confirmed on October 29, 2024, has sent shockwaves through Ghanaian politics, as she was widely recognized as a dedicated advocate for grassroots representation.

In an official statement signed by the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the Commission extended condolences to Madam Donkor’s family and supporters. “The Electoral Commission has today received information on the unfortunate passing of the Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor. May she rest in peace,” the statement reads.

To address the procedural implications of her passing, the EC referenced Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides for a ten-day period for political parties to nominate a new candidate in the event of a candidate’s death after the close of nominations but prior to the election. This provision allows the GFP an opportunity to nominate a replacement for Madam Donkor, ensuring that the party’s representation remains intact for the upcoming election.

In accordance with the Constitution, the EC has advised the GFP to proceed with arrangements to select a new candidate and notify the Commission promptly. This guidance reflects the EC’s commitment to upholding constitutional provisions and ensuring a fair electoral process, even in unforeseen circumstances.

The printing of presidential ballot papers, which was near completion, has now been temporarily suspended to accommodate this potential change on the ballot. The EC emphasized its commitment to transparency and procedural fairness during this sensitive period and assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure compliance with legal standards.

The EC’s press release also underscored its dedication to supporting the democratic process in Ghana by providing a clear framework for the GFP’s transition. The Commission will closely monitor developments and adjust timelines accordingly to facilitate the GFP’s participation in the December 7 elections.

Background on Akua Donkor

Madam Akua Donkor, a figure known for her outspoken advocacy and grassroots appeal, founded the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) with a vision to uplift and empower the common citizen. Despite limited resources, she made a lasting impact on the political landscape and inspired many with her commitment to accessible governance.

Looking Ahead

With just weeks remaining until the 2024 elections, this development has introduced a significant procedural shift. The Electoral Commission remains dedicated to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process and has urged all stakeholders to remain informed and engaged as the GFP undertakes the process of selecting a new presidential candidate.
