11 dead in Amanase crash on Accra-Kumasi Highway
At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in a gory accident involving a fuel tanker and a Sprinter bus at Amanase, near Suhum, on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22.
The crash, which occurred around 5 a.m., involved a fuel tanker with registration number GR 1300-16 and a Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GW 6510-23.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be fully established, preliminary police investigations suggest the tanker driver may have dozed off and veered into the lane of the oncoming Sprinter bus.
The collision resulted in the instant death of 11 passengers—two women and nine men—while several others sustained serious injuries.
Rescue teams from the Suhum Fire Service and Police Service responded swiftly to the scene, evacuating the injured and working to control traffic along the busy highway.
ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, PRO for the Ghana National Fire Service in Suhum, confirmed the death toll in an interview, adding that the injured are currently receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who expressed deep sorrow over the incident, is visiting the hospital to assess the condition of the injured and provide necessary support, including possible transfers to better-equipped facilities for those in critical condition.
