Galamsey fight will soon show results – Minerals Commission Deputy CEO
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, has assured Ghanaians that the government’s intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, will soon yield tangible results.
Despite numerous attempts by successive governments to eliminate the menace of galamsey, results have been largely minimal.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 15, 2025, Mr. Tandoh acknowledged the devastating environmental impact of illegal small-scale mining in Ghana, citing its far-reaching consequences on water bodies, ecosystems, agricultural lands, and biodiversity.
“Galamsey is a big fight,” he stated. “Yesterday, I met with a couple of colonels and brigadiers at Burma Camp. There were a few logistics we needed to put in place. But we are far advanced in plans we have. A technical report will be brought to my office today. I think we are on course and I believe that in the shortest possible time, people will begin to see what we have done. Nobody is sleeping on this.”
Mr. Tandoh emphasised the complexity of the issue, noting that while the public may expect swift results, the strategy requires careful planning and coordination with the military and the Ghana Navy.
“I know that everybody wished that we have the magic wand to just in 24 hours clear this. But looking at the strategies the military together with the Ghana Navy is putting in place, I believe the moment we enter the field, we should be able to clear this in no time,” he stated.
