We’ll make it difficult for NPP to keep second force status – NDC’s Hamza Suhuyini
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has declared that the party is determined to weaken the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) standing in Ghana’s democratic landscape.
His comments follow the NDC’s victory in the Akwatia by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, where the party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako, defeated the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
The Electoral Commission’s certified results showed Bediako securing 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast, while Asumadu polled 15,235. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed 82 votes. A total of 303 ballots were rejected.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, September 3, Mr Suhuyini said the outcome of the by-election underscores the declining fortunes of the NPP.
“The defeat in Akwatia is a reminder of the abyss the NPP finds itself in, and as a serious party, they must begin to do self-introspection and not think that the only way to solve their problem is the election of a flagbearer,” he said.
He added that the NDC’s objective goes beyond winning elections to ensuring the NPP loses its grip as a dominant political force.
“Our aim as a political party is to ensure that we make it practically impossible for the NPP to be the second force as far as our democratic process is concerned, because the NPP is the greatest danger to this country. We have been consistent at this since 1992, and they have demonstrated that in the last eight years,” Mr Suhuyini stressed.
