UE/R: Govt committed to ending Bawku conflict, return of displaced workers – Minister

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the protracted Bawku conflict and ensuring the safe return of displaced workers.

The conflict, rooted in longstanding ethnic and traditional tensions, has frequently erupted into violence over the past four years, displacing workers and severely disrupting livelihoods.

Speaking at the Regional May Day celebration in Bolgatanga, Donatus Atanga acknowledged the human and economic toll the conflict has taken and expressed optimism about the ongoing mediation process led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, describing it as a viable path to lasting peace in the area.

“As we celebrate our workers, it is important to know that the Bawku Conflict has displaced a lot of workers for the past four years. The government, through the Otumfuo-led mediation, is making efforts to resolve the conflict and restore peace in the area.

The resolution of the conflict is of utmost importance to the president and the regional security council. Also, it is of concern because of the growing breakdown of discipline and ethics among our working population,” he stated.
