Election 2024: Ghana’s democracy is safe – Mahama assures
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Ghana’s democracy remains strong and secure following the recent elections.
He said this after meeting with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ahead of the inauguration of the 2024 National Transition Team, marking a critical milestone in Ghana’s democratic process.
The meeting, held Wednesday, December 11, at the Jubilee House in Accra, signals the start of an organised and peaceful transition of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The National Transition Team, a constitutional body mandated to oversee the handover process, will play a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transfer of power. This process includes briefing the incoming government on key state matters, facilitating access to vital government data, and coordinating the formal inauguration of the President-elect.
The meeting between the two leaders underscores Ghana’s strong democratic tradition, where outgoing and incoming administrations collaborate to uphold the country’s governance framework.
In a Facebook post after the meeting, Mahama emphasised that the successful electoral process was a victory for both democracy and Ghana.
He reassured Ghanaians that the nation’s democracy is safe and highlighted the importance of bipartisan cooperation in strengthening and consolidating democratic gains.
Mahama noted that “I responded to President Akufo-Addo’s invitation for a courtesy visit to the Presidency this morning to begin the transition process. We had a cordial meeting, and the President briefed me on security and the economy. Later today, we will inaugurate the Joint Transition Team. I also expressed my sincerest appreciation to the President for his phone call on Monday to congratulate me. It was a good mark of statesmanship, giving me a sense of déjà vu.
Democracy and Ghana are the winners following the electoral process. Despite all the anxieties people had ahead of the election and voting day, Ghana has done it again. We can be sure that our democracy is safe, and by working together across bipartisan lines, we can continue to deepen and consolidate it.”
